A FUNDRAISING appeal has been launched to help raise the roof of a run-down railway shed.
Plans are in the pipeline to transform the Grade II listed Meliden Goods Shed on the walkway between Prestatyn and Dyserth into a community hub with a café, heritage centre, cycling facility, allotments and space for artists.
Grŵp Cynefin, Denbighshire County Council and Meliden Residents Action Group are spearheading the project, which has already won support from the Big Lottery Fund. A stage 2 bid has also been made to the Big Lottery Community Asset Transfer 2 fund to help renovate the building to be called The Shed.
Now Meliden Residents Action Group’s fundraising and events committee are giving people the chance to be a part of the £1.2 million scheme and help raise £10,000 over the next two years.
Mair Edwards, Community Initiatives Manager at Grŵp Cynefin, said: “The Shed proposals provide a great opportunity to turn an empty, historical building into a real community asset for the people of Meliden and beyond. Exciting plans are in the pipeline and, going forward, fundraising will be a key part of these.
“For just £1, people can buy a slate with the donations going towards The Shed’s roof. All the donations will be acknowledged on a plaque once the hub opens.”
The ‘buy a slate’ project is just one a number of fundraising initiatives organised by the action group which has been taking part in events throughout Prestatyn with local schools including Ysgol Melyd, Meliden, and Ysgol y Llys, Prestatyn, lending their support.
Anyone wanting to help the appeal can buy their slates from Meliden Post Office, Ffordd Talargoch, Meliden.
Subject to funding, building work could start on the project as early as Easter 2017.
“The ‘buy a slate’ scheme is just one of a series of fundraising initiatives in the pipeline and the group will be at a number of local events over the next few months raising awareness of plans for The Shed,” added Mair.
Anyone who wishes to get involved with the project can contact Grŵp Cynefin on 0300 111 2122.
